If your intent is to learn new vocabulary, then you need to be able to IDENTIFY parts of speech.
The main parts of speech that are necessary to know are:

NOUN
COMMON NOUN - Person, place, thing, idea.
PRONOUN - I, you, we, they, them, us, etc.
PROPER NOUN - Porsche, David, Sally, Mom, Webster's Dictionary, Time magazine, Chicago Tribune.

VERB
VERB - Action of the NOUN;
'BE' VERB, a STATE OF BEING (is, am, are, were).

MODIFIERS
ADJECTIVE - MODIFIES (describes) any NOUNS in the sentence.
ADVERB - MODIFIES (describes) a VERB, ADJECTIVE, or another ADVERB.

When you can identify a word's part of speech in a sentence:
-You can narrow down its DEFINITION, through CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS, or HOW the word is used.
-You can understand the basis of STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS.
