Quality Can Be Affordable
Northeastern Illinois University, through its Graduate
College
and faculty, provides the resources, the facilities
and the
academic environment to advance learning, to foster
creativity,
and to nurture intellectual independence in graduate
education.
Graduate students pursue advanced studies and join faculty
in extending knowledge through research and scholarly
activities.
The Graduate College offers the majority of its coursework
during the late afternoon and evening hours to accommodate
individuals who are pursuing a master’s degree
on a parttime
basis. Students wishing to carry a full academic load
should anticipate course scheduling limitations and
plan
accordingly.
At present, the Graduate College offers Master's degree
programs in 38 academic concentrations. To view a current list of all Graduate College programs or a current Graduate College Advisors List please click the appropriate link. All students
admitted to the Master's programs are enrolled in the
Graduate College and governed by its policies and procedures.
Graduate students, therefore, have different tuition
rates, grievance procedures, and registration processing.
They are eligible to apply for the teaching/research
assistantships and tuition waivers available through
the College and departments.
Master of Arts in Latin American Literatures and Cultures
All graduate courses in the M.A. in Foreign Languages
and literatures will be taught entirely in Spanish.
The Master of Arts Degree Program in Latin American
Literatures and Cultures is a graduate level program
which will prepare students for a fully productive future
in a world which is increasingly inter-related, multi-cultural,
by offering them the opportunity to enhance and deepen
their understanding of Spanish-speaking peoples of the
Americas through the practice afforded in curricular
and extra-curricular programmatic activities, students
will strengthen and enrich their communicative abilities
and sensitivities and thus be enabled to work with Latin
Americans and Latinos in a variety of settings both
in Latin America and in the United States.
Hence, unlike most graduate programs in "Spanish"
which focus on language and literature, this program
prepares students of many different career paths to
interact and communicate knowledgeably with Spanish-
and Spanglish-speaking (Hispanic and Latino) clients,
students, customers, patients, etc., and with true understanding
and sensitivity to their needs. It will also prepare
students well for some of the very best Doctoral programs
in Spanish, Latin American Studies or in Cultural Studies,
if they choose more advanced studies.
Students enrolled in this program are expected to complete
thirty-three credit hours at the graduate level. Because
of the multi-disciplinary nature of the program, nine
of those credit hours may be taken (with prior approval)
in other disciplines in related courses. All graduate
courses in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
will be taught entirely in Spanish. In addition to these
thirty-three graduate-level credit hours, students must
complete at least six credit hours in courses in either
French or Portuguese.
For further information about the program, please contact
John Geary, Chair Department of Foreign Languages and
Literatures (773)-442-4293.
