Program Overview

The Master of Arts in History program aims to provide all graduate students with (1) an understanding of history as a mode of inquiry; (2) an in-depth exposure to at least two different historical fields; (3) a grounding in historical research methods; and (4) an introduction to the art of historical interpretation. This program is designed to serve all who desire a more sophisticated understanding of history.

Admission Requirements

Note: The Department of History will admit students to the Graduate
Program in History on an annual basis in FALL semesters only.

Students must also fulfill the standard requirements for admission to the Graduate College. In addition:

Students must have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours in undergraduate history. (Those who do not meet this requirement may petition the Department's Graduate Advisor in writing for admission.) Applicants must also submit to the Graduate Advisor a graded paper written for an upper division, undergraduate course, preferably in History. (Those who do not meet this requirement may also petition the Graduate Advisor in writing for admission.) Graded papers and/or letters of petition must be included in the application packet.

The department recommends prospective students meet with the Graduate Advisor for assistance in planning their graduate program.

Degree Requirements

Students have the choice between two options:

Thesis Option

Required Courses: (36 cr.)

History 401- Historiography and Historical Method................…3 cr.
Seven 400-level history electives................................................21 cr.
Two graduate research seminars..................................................6 cr.
History 499 - Thesis Seminar: History.........................................6 cr.

Non-Thesis Option

Required Courses: (36 cr.)

History 401 - Historiography and Historical Method...........................3 cr.
Seven 400-level history electives.......................................................21 cr.
Two graduate research seminars..........................................................6 cr.
Two electives in History or in a related field chosen in
consultation with advisor......................................................................6 cr.

Other Requirements:

  1. Upon completion of 12 credit hours of course work with a grade point average of at least B (3.0), each student will file an application for candidacy with the Graduate College.

  2. Before completion of the program, students will consult with the graduate advisor to select two fields for the written, comprehensive examination from among the general areas of (i) European History, (ii) non-European/non-United States History, and (iii) United States History. Students must take at least two courses in each of their designated fields.

  3. After completing their course work, students will take a three-hour, written, comprehensive examination based on courses and/or topics in the two fields selected. This examination will be evaluated by two professors in the appropriate fields and by the graduate advisor or a third, designated professor. To pass the written comprehensive examination the student must receive a passing grade from at least two of the three professors. If a student fails the written comprehensive examination, s/he may retake it once.
