Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Gifted Education Program is designed for teachers, program coordinators, counselors, administrators, and concerned parents, who are interested in providing appropriate educational programs for gifted students.

Admission Requirements

Students must fulfill the requirements for admission to the Graduate College.

In addition, students who wish to enroll in the Master's Degree Program in Gifted Education must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. A Bachelor's degree.

  2. A teaching certificate.

  3. Two letters of recommendation from individuals who have supervised you in a teaching situation.

Degree Requirements

  1. Thirty-six approved graduate credit hours (see detail below)

  2. Master's Degree project.

  3. Three hours of practicum in an approved gifted education setting.

  4. A valid State of Illinois teaching certificate at the time of degree candidacy or successfully complete the Illinois State Basic Skills certification examination

Students completing a masters of arts degree in gifted education must complete the following course work:

* SPED 450. Psychology of Individuals Who are Gifted and Talented. 3 cr.
* SPED 451. Creativity. 3 cr.
* SPED 452. Education of Individuals Who are Gifted and Talented. 3 cr.
* SPED 453. Seminar in Curriculum and Materials for the Gifted. 3 cr.
* SPED 455. Bibliography and Methodology in Gifted Education. 3 cr.
* SPED 456. Parenting and Advocacy for Gifted and Talented. 3 cr.
* SPED 457. Research Seminar for the Gifted. 3 cr.
* SPED 459. Field Demonstration in Gifted Education. 3 cr.
* FOUR (4) electives. 12 cr.

Total Credit Hours 36 cr.

A course in microcomputers is strongly recommended for those who have no background in educational technology.
