NEIU Scholarships

NEIU Cooperating Teacher Certificate
Graduate students only. Current teachers who have supervised
a NEIU student teacher in a classroom setting arranged through
Office of Clinical Experiences and Student Teaching. For
each student teacher supervised the cooperating teacher
will be waived tuition for one 3 credit hour class. No repayment
obligation. Contact NEIU's Office of Clinical Experiences

Class Gift Scholarship
Endowed by: Members of NEIU's graduating classes who have
contributed to the fund since 1996. Recipients must be full-time
, graduate or undergraduate students. The scholarship may
be used for tuition, fees or books. Award amount: $2500
scholarships.

NEIU Chuck Kane Scholarship
Established by: The Kane Committee and Northeastern Illinois
University with a portion of the net proceeds each from
the Anunal Chuck Kane Memorial Golf Outing. Candidates must
be outstanding full-time or part-time, graduate or undergraduate
students. The scholorship may be used for tuition, fees
or books. Award amount: One $300 scholarship
NEIU Foundation Award

Bernard J. Brommel Doctoral Scholarship
Endowed by Bernard J. Brommel, Northeastern Illinois University
Professor Emeritus of Speech and Performing Arts. The purpose
of this scholarship is to support NEIU graduates who are
pursuing doctoral degrees. Students who are interested in
applying for this scholarship should contact Michelle Morrow
at M-Morrow@neiu.edu regarding receiving the special application.

Illinois-based Scholarships

The Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois
Program (DFI). African, Native or Asian Americans, or Hispanics
with three years' residency in Illinois are eligible to
apply. The recipient must pursue and accept a position at
an Illinois post-secondary educational institution, Illinois
higher education governing board, or an education-related
position at a state agency or repay 20% of their cumulative
award amount. Applicants must be nominated by their home

Illinois Special Education Teacher Tuition Waiver
Undergraduate and Graduate. The Illinois Special Education
Teacher Tuition Waiver Program encourages current teachers
and academically talented students to pursue careers in
any area of special education as a public, private or parochial
elementary or secondary school teacher in Illinois. Recipients
are exempt from paying tuition and fees at an eligible institution
for up to four calendar years. Repayment to state is necessary

Illinois General Assembly Scholarship
Undergraduate and Graduate. Illinois law provides for each
state legislator to annually award a 4-year scholarship
to the University of Illinois and a 4-year scholarship to
any other state-supported university (including NEIU). These
scholarships can be divided into four 1-year scholarships
if the legislator wishes to do so. Students wishing to apply
for the General Assembly Scholarship must contact their
State Senator and State Representative for information on
the application process. To determine the name and phone
number of your legislators, contact your County Clerk's
Election office. The State of Illinois website has a Directory
of County Officials, or you can find your County Clerk in
your local phone book.

Illinois Veterans Grant
Undergraduate and graduate. Veterans must complete appropriate
application form and furnish one copy of their official
separation form DD-214 which demonstrates: 1) Illinois residency
until at least 6 months prior to induction. 2) served on
active duty in the Armed Forces for at least one year at
any time since 1940; and 3) returned to Illinois within
6 months after discharge. Payment of tuition and some fees
at any state university. Students may enroll full or part-time.

Illinois National Guard/Naval Militia
Members of the Illinois National Guard are eligible to receive
a grant for payment of tuition and certain fees for either
undergraduate or graduate study at Illinois public colleges,
universities and community colleges. Recipients may use
their awards for 8 semesters or 12 quarters (or the equivalent).
Enlisted member who has served at least one year in the
Illinois National Guard or Naval Militia. Students may enroll

Illinois Dependents of POW's and MIA's Scholarship
Undergraduate and graduate. Students who are dependents
(spouse and/or children) of Illinois residents, officially
declared prisoners of war, missing-in-action, killed, or
100 percent disabled since January 1, 1960. Contact Illinois

Illinois ROTC Scholarships
Undergraduate and graduate. Based on merit. Covers tuition
and some fees up to four years. No repayment obligation.

Other Selective Fellowships and Scholarships
Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans provide
stipends of $20,000 per year plus half the tuition costs
for up to two years of graduate study in the U.S. To be
eligible, a student must hold a Green Card, or be a naturalized
U.S. citizen, or be the child of two parents who are both
naturalized citizens. (A Green Card holder must have had
more than one year of IRS filings.) The applicant must either
hold a bachelor's degree or be a college senior, and must
be at least 20 and not more than 30 years old. There are

Business and Professional Women's Foundation (BPW) Career
Advancement Scholarships provide a stipend of $500-$2,000
to older or mid-life women seeking the education necessary
for reentry or advancement within the workplace. Women must
be 25 years of age or older and U. S. citizens; all fields
of study are eligible. Applications are available January

Hispanic Scholarship Fund - College Scholarship Program
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund was founded in 1975 to help
Hispanic-American college students complete their education.
The scholarships are available on a competitive basis for
community college, four-year college, and graduate students
of Hispanic heritage. Awards generally range from $1000
to $3,000.
Eligibility Requirements
• Be of Hispanic heritage (one parent fully Hispanic
or each parent half Hispanic)
• Be a U.S. Citizen or a legal Permanent Resident
(with permanent resident card)
• Have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)
of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale (or 3.7 on a 5 point scale)
• Have earned at least 12 undergraduate units in the
U.S. or Puerto Rico
• Be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at an accredited
U.S. college or university full-time (24 undergraduate/12
graduate units per year)
Selection
Applications are evaluated on the following criteria:
• Academic Achievement (including GPA, and past academic
performance)
• Letter of Recommendation (from college professor/advisor
on official school letterhead)
• Personal Statement (writing skills, personal strengths
& goals, professionalism, community involvement, and
other qualities.)
• Financial Need (for educational purposes)
• The selection criteria may also vary according to
donor requirements

Student Loan Programs

Federal Perkins Loan
Undergraduate and graduate students. Must be enrolled full
or half-time in a degree program. Must show need. Amounts
vary. Long-term repayment at 5% interest. Cancellation of
debt under certain specific conditions. Must complete FAFSA.

Federal Family Educational Loans (FFEL) Stafford Loans
(Subsidized and Unsubsidized)
Undergraduate and graduate students. Must be enrolled at
least half-time in a degree program. Must be U.S. citizen
or permanent resident of U.S. Amounts vary. Must show need
to qualify for subsidized loan. Funds are lent to students
from banks, credit unions and other approved lenders. Long-term
repayment. Interest rate varies every July 1st; not to exceed
8.25%. Must complete FAFSA.

Emergency Loan Fund (Northeastern)
Undergraduate and graduate students. Must have emergency
need and a validated bill for the current term. Maximum
$150. Thirty-day repayment, no interest. Contact NEIU's

Undergraduate and graduate students. All students enrolled
for 6 hours or more are eligible to apply for part-time

Eligibility of students is determined by approved needs-analysis
methods. Must be enrolled in a degree program. Must complete
