Well, yes, McCain's people did something ludicrous. The ad suggesting that the mindless celebrity of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton is analogous to Obama's status in public life is ridiculous. But I don't think we should get too bent out of shape about it.

First, it is unlikely that it will shift one vote from Obama to McCain. It is more likely to cause a shift in the other direction.

Second, the ad is so silly that it suggests desperation on the part of the McCain add staff. As Martha Stewart would say, "It's a good thing.:

Third, the follow-up story (that Paris Hilton's dad is a heavy contributor to the McCain campaign, and is not pleased with the ad) is a wonderful Damon Runyon-esque touch. The irony is worth the ad.

Fourth, give McCain a break. His opponent is dynamic, attractive, energetic and articulate. We Democrats have long advocated the leveling of playing fields. What other than irrelevant pot-shots does McCain have going for him?

So, please, lay off the heavy criticism of McCain for the kind of campaign his handlers are launching.

Cut McCain some slack.

Give McCain a break.

Give McCain a kind smile if you pass him on the street.

Just don't vote for him.
