FINANCIAL AID

Several opportunities for financial assistance are available to graduate students.

MERIT TUITION WAIVERS

Tuition waivers are given each semester to students who are making good progress through the program. Applications, which must be filed each term, are reviewed by all full-time faculty members; requests are prioritized so that as may students as possible are funded. Factors which may affect funding include:
  • Graduate GPA (this must be at least 3.5 on 4-point scale)
  • Good academic record other than GPA
  • Numbers of graduate credit hours completed (the more, the better, until 30, then opposite is true)
  • The number of other applications received (highest number are received Fall term)
  • Nearness to completing degree requirements (waivers often given for RP or thesis)
  • A maximum equivalent of 36 hours may be waived during the student's program of study
  • A C received in a graduate class may affect tuition waivers
  • Outstanding incompletes may affect tuition waivers

Merit waivers may be used only for graduate level courses. Contact the Department's Graduate Coordinator for more information.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

Graduate assistantships typically require 20 hours of work per week. Assistantships pay a stipend, waive tuition, and usually provide valuable educational experiences. Opportunities are limited.

TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP

The department typically hires one Graduate Teaching Assistant to assist in the Introduction to Geography General Education course (G&ES 104) and Intro to Env. Studies (150) for Fall and Spring terms. Hiring is on a one-term basis with the indefinite possibility of renewal . Applications are taken any time.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANTSHIP

One graduate student is hired to assist in maintaining the G&ES computer laboratory (S-252) and help students in computer-based courses. Sought-after qualifications include cartographic training, experience with hardware and software installation, programming skills, applications software, communication and instructional skills, and ability to work flexible hours. Tuition is waived Fall and Spring.

LIBRARY REFERENCE ASSISTANTSHIPS

The Ronald Williams library hires graduate students for a variety of tasks. Inquire at the library.
