Learning is your primary focus at university

During the first year, you will notice the differences between the high school and university way of doing things. At university, you are expected to take responsibility for your own learning. With the assistance and guidance of First-Year Experience staff and faculty, you are taking the first steps toward your future..

Research in education has demonstrated that setting high, but achievable goals for students from an early stage of their development creates a mindset wherein students continually push themselves to meet higher standards toward excellence in their academic pursuits and in life. By linking its goals to the General Education curriculum, the FYE Colloquium will prepare students for academic achievement that spans across the curriculum in terms of the development of critical thinking skills as well as improved written and oral expression.

Ability to communicate both in written and orally, skills required to gather , analyze, document and integrate information and understanding of historical and cultural differences are some of the goals from the General Education Curriculum to be addressed through FYE Colloquium.

You can prepare to meet the academic demands of university in any of the course offered in the FYE Colloquium. There is also tutoring available for you in your academic coursework through Supplemental Instruction in the Learning Center and the Writing Lab.
You might also consider entering the University Honors Program or taking advantage of opportunities to study abroad for a short or long period through International Programs. English language learners should also investigate the offerings of the English Language Program (ELP)  (N.B. Find out about the new minor in Interdisciplinary English Studies [for ESL] ) .
