 The First-Year Experience Program is a multi-faceted, university-wide initiative that engages students in a comprehensive series of activities designed to ensure their success in higher education. It offers students an initial opportunity to explore new areas of study, to develop wider intellectual interests and improve their analytical and communicative abilities.

 There are two aspects of First-Year Experience Program: the curricular and and the co-curricular.At the center of the curricular aspect is the FYE Colloquium Courses in the FYE Colloquium series provide an opportunity for first-year students to explore the university experience through the lenses of different disciplines. On the co-curricular side, components across the University function to support students' endeavors toward full engagement.

 The First-Year Experience Program fosters a joy of learning and a commitment to life-long learning within a mutually supportive community. Within this context, the students establish high, but attainable, academic goals and achieve these.

It also teaches respect for personal differences and an appreciation of cultural diversity. An integral component of the initiative is service to community and active citizenship among participants as a means of preparing them to become contributing members in society upon graduation.

Northeastern's commitment to the First-Year Experience is demonstrated through its participation in the Foundations of Excellence established by the Policy Center of the First College Year. The 9 Foundational Dimensions of the Foundations of Excellence are:

1. Philosophy

Approach the first year in ways that are intentional and based on a philosophy/rationale of the first year that informs relevant institutional policies and practices.

Create organizational structures and policies that provide a comprehensive, integrated, and coordinated approach to the first year.

           
         
3. Learning

Deliver intentional curricular and co-curricular learning experiences that engage students in order to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors consistent with the desired outcomes of higher education and the institution's philosophy and mission.

Elevate the first college year to a high priority for the faculty.

           
         
5. Transitions

Facilitate appropriate student transitions through policies and practices that are intentional and aligned with institutional mission.
