Study Abroad Opportunities:

One of the best ways to improve your linguistic and cultural literacy is to study abroad. NEIU offers short-term summer programs, as well as semester-long programs through NEIU’s partner universities, including the University of Guanajuato in Mexico and the University of King Juan Carlos in Madrid, Spain.

2013 Summer Programs:

  • Mexico: 6 Credit Hours; Contact Prof. Brandon Bisbey at B-Bisbey@neiu.edu. Please note that the summer program in Mexico has been canceled for 2013 due to insufficient enrollment. As an alternative, students may consider the semester programs described below.

Semester Programs In Guanajuato, Mexico and Madrid, Spain:

NEIU has partnerships with the University of Guanajuato in Guanajuato, Mexico and the University of Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, Spain.  NEIU students can attend either or both of these universities for a semester or a full academic year.  Tuition is paid at NEIU, and courses transfer as NEIU courses.  You may use your financial aid package to cover all or part of the tuition, transportation, room, and board.

Courses at the University Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid are offered in both English and Spanish.

The University of Guanajuato offers three options for NEIU students:

    1. For students who have completed one semester or less of college-level Spanish, or its equivalent. This option is only available for one full year: 1 semester of Spanish language courses (full time) plus one mandatory semester content courses taught in Spanish.
    2. For students who have completed two or three semesters of college-level Spanish, or its equivalent.  This option is available for one semester or a full year.  First semester: two Spanish language courses plus two content courses in Spanish.  Second semester: optional extension for content courses taught in Spanish.
    3. For students who have completed four or more semesters of college-level Spanish, or its equivalent.  This option is available for one semester or a full year.  First semester: four regular academic courses per semester.  Second semester: optional extension for content courses taught in Spanish.

    Application deadlines are:

    • For Spring study: October of the previous semester

    • For Fall study: April of the previous semester
