LLL Student Employee Software Page 1

Because of all the things we havto do, we at the Language Lab have to use a variety of software to help us keep the place operational. As stated in the handbook, we have spilt this into two parts:

Fixing Student Log Attendance Records

We use Paradox to keep track of student attendance. The CAN-8 software and many of the foreign language textbook-based online websites keep track of students attendance and usage as well.  But if a teacher wants a simple printed record of attendance, the Student Log is a very effective program for this purpose.

Because it is an old DOS program with certain limitations, it needs to be corrected once in a while. The following are step by step instructions and pictures on how to add students (people who register late and are not in our database yet), fix time logs, give total attendance records to students, edit student records, and other useful things.  You and the students can access the Student Log by clicking the icon on the computer's Desktop or in the Start Menu.

Tell students to click the icon and enter their 9 digit Student ID Number and Course Reference Number. They were shown this at Lab Orientation at the start of the semester. You and they can review how to log in and log out at http://www.neiu.edu/~fldept/login.htm and click "Student Log" in the list of links in the middle of the page. Before you can enter the records to fix something, you have to make sure NO ONE is in the log-in screen. Otherwise you will get a screen like this. The number stands for the seat number where somebody left the program running.

Now that you made sure no one is on the log-in screen, click the Student Log icon to get to the login screen and input the administrator code as shown below:

Like the Student Login, the dashes fill in automatically. You will be given the actual code by the lab director. Students are not allowed in Director's Menu shown below, so cover the Login Screen with your hand as you type. Press Enter, after which, you will get this menu:

New will add a student to the database:

Choosing "Edit" will give the following menu:

Choosing "Student" will edit a student's name, Student ID Number and Course Reference Number, that has been wrongly entered:

The "Class" option allows adding or deletion of the list of all FL classes. Usually the lab director inputs the list of classes in advance, so you will rarely need to use this screen:

Choosing "Log" on this menu, will allow you to fix student log-in records:

As you can see from the picture below, we had to fix a person's log-in/out sheet because they got a "nothing to report" page. We delete the log-out time and press the F2 button on the keyboard to save the changes. This fixes about 95% of all log problems:

After you quit this screen, instruct the student to log out again. The report should print normally with the correct login and logout time

The "Reports" menu will give you access to total time a student or class has spent in the lab:

"Auto" gives reports for all students who have attended the lab for the entire semester: (We give this to professors only at the end of the term.)

The "Student" report will give you a print out of an individual student's total time in the lab: (You have to put his/her Student ID Number and Course Reference Number first then press print for a hard copy of the report or "View" to see the total on the screen).

After you are done, press Quit on both screens to get back to the desktop.
