Language Learning Lab Computers & Software
The Language Learning Lab has 35 iMac computers with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Window 7.These computers contain a variety of language instructional programs on the hard drive, on a campus network and CDs and DVDs to be inserted into the optical drives. These programs are used to review grammar, develop vocabulary and increase cultural understanding in the new language.

The power switch is located on the back of each machine.
Mac OS X will give a screen promting to select the operating system, then a login screen.
The operating system can be changed by clicking the appropriate logoff menu or BootCamp icon.
To switch to Windows, click the Apple symbol in the upper left corner of the screen and click Logoff.
Click Windows on the operating system selection screen. The computer will restart in Windows 7 and login automatically to the desktop. To switch back to Mac OS X click the black diamond Bootcamp shaped icon in the system tray.
Some programs run off the computer by double clicking the Start Menu or the Dock.
Various word processors, office suites, utilities, multimedia applications and other programs can be found in the dock.
Other programs require a CD-ROM which runs from the optical drive on the right side of each screen.
In Mac OS X a CD image or disk image looks like a flash drive icon on the desktop.
Some frequently used Windows based CD-Rom programs are stored on the hard drive as images which are virtually inserted with a Virtual CD drive program before clicking the program icon from the Start Menu. Right click the silver CD shaped icon in the system tray.
. Click the word "Mount" to browse for the file. Both methods will lead a iso image file located on the hard drive. Once the file is selected, run the program from the Start Menu as if it were a CD. In Mac OS X a CD rom shaped icon appears on the desktop when a CD is inserted or an iso image of a CD is double clicked.
The lab has access to World Wide Web sites of interest to students studying a foreign language.
Students should save their work on external drives due to security software that is password controlled that prevents saving on the hard drive.
Faculty and staff have computers available for them to use while visiting the lab. An instructor's console is used for teaching, presentations, projecting video and managing the lab, while an office PC are also available at the service counter. The lab office, LIB-450 is equipped with an HP scanner.
A Northeastern Illinois University I.D. is required to use CD-ROMs. |
