Writing Lab Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who are we?
Our tutors are experienced writers who work with you on all phases of your writing process in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Our goal is to collaborate with you to help you develop your own strategies for writing.

Who uses the Writing Lab?
You may use the Writing Lab if you are taking a class at Northeastern. Students at all levels and from all fields of study come to work with us.

What writing tasks may I work on with a tutor?
We will work with you on any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming with you, understanding your assignment, thesis development, organization and unity, details and examples, introductions and conclusions, or topic sentences. We also can help both native and non-native speakers to master grammar and sentence structure skills.

What is our philosophy and approach?
Our focus is to help you reinforce and practice what you are learning about writing in your classes. Our tutors do not teach, but instead, work with you to help you develop your own ideas and come to your own conclusions and choices.

What about proofreading?
Our tutors do not proofread your papers for you, nor do we correct any grammar or spelling mistakes while you wait. Instead, we help you find strategies for recognizing and mastering your own patterns of errors so that you become a stronger, more confident writer.

What can I accomplish in one session?
In a 50 - minute session, you and your tutor will focus on one or two specific issues in your writing. If you have many problems and questions you want to address, it may take several sessions to address them all.

How often should I come to the Lab?
You most likely can't walk away from only one session with a finished or perfect paper, so we suggest you come regularly to develop your individual skills. You can see the same tutor every week throughout the semester if you would like. You can get further advice on how often and when to use the Lab from your instructor and your tutor.
