Tips on Preparing Your Class
for a Writing Lab Presentation

Once you have invited a tutor to make a class visit, talk to your students about the forthcoming visit in a positive light.

We always stress that the Writing Lab is a free service available by appointment to all Northeastern students, just as the library is free and open to them.

Talk to your students about the writing assignments they will be doing in your class, and find out from them if they have any questions about their writing assignments. Encourage them to prepare questions for the tutor who will be visiting your class. It always helps if you, the instructor, asks the tutor a few questions during the visit, too.

Encourage students to come to the Writing Lab:

  • Inform students that the lab is for everyone: students who like to write, students who don’t like to write, and students who just want to be better writers.

  • Encourage all students to come to the lab, including your best writers.

  • Let students know about your own experiences with writing, and how you share your work with others before publication, for example.

  • Tell the students about writing centers where you have studied or worked.

  • Let students know that visiting the lab is a way to learn to be a better writer.

 Tell students what we do:

  • We provide one-on-one tutoring to any student currently enrolled in a university class.

  • We help students plan, develop, and articulate their ideas.

  • We help students at all stages of the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, and proofreading.
