Purpose and Goals of the Seminar

The purpose of Web 101 is to provide an opportunity for NEIU Faculty to use face-to-face and online methods to learn how to create a web-enriched course. Specifically, the course provides materials to assist a faculty member who wishes to work toward creating a course with a web presence similar to the one this seminar uses.

Course Meeting Times and Location

Except for important dates (as noted on the Calendar), the Web 101 seminar will meet as a traditional seminar might, but also will use the Internet and the World Wide Web for information regarding the seminar. Note: this does NOT mean that this is a seminar which is an "easy" course. In many ways, the course may be harder, since you are more responsible as a participant than in "traditional" ones. Bottom line: in addition to or instead of going to seminar meetings, you work on the web and the net. There will be regular seminar meetings which are highly recommended. See the Calendar for a schedule of class meetings.

If you have problems, you contact either of us immediately by email:

or phone or in person in L-361-A at NEIU's campus. Meetings with facilitators should be scheduled through Paul at X 4550.

Also - asynchronous conferencing will occur throughout the seminar, and will be you daily contact with the other particpants and the seminar facilitators.

    TEXTBOOK
There is no textbook. There is a book which is referred to, but is not required in any way. The seminar instructional materials will occasionally refer to it:

Creating Web Pages For Dummies ® Quick Reference, By Doug Lowe
      ISBN: 0-7645-0363-4
      Price: $12.99 U.S.
      Publication date:04/24/1998

It will be referred to especially in the Page assignment, but in other places as well.  To help you find the references to it, you will see the text icon (above) whenever it is referred to. It is inexpensive and fun to use, with a binding which allows you to easily have it sitting next to your PC!

The book also has a useful Glossary ("Techie Talk") which you should refer to for definitions of jargon and terms.

    CLASS LISTSERV: WEBSEMINAR-L

There is a class listserv you must subscribe to and participate in.
To find more information regarding this, see E-Mail. As soon as you've subscribed to the WEBSEMINAR listserv, send some email to the list, telling who you are, why you're taking the seminar, etc. Consider the list to be like a faculty lounge, where you can get and give info, where you chat with other faculty members about teaching and learning.

    Web 101 WebBoard

There are web conferencing tools for the Web 101 Seminar.

Learning and Teaching Style of the Web 101 Seminar

Our goal is to follow the indicators shown in Implementing New Ways to Learn and Teach.  Take a look at these indicators, and throughout the term we'll discuss together whether or not we are seeing these indicators, and whether or not they are relevant.
