Outline of Tools You Can Use for Creating Web Pages:
* An authoring tool:
- HTML editors, such as:
- Hot Dog Professional (Windows 3.1/95/NT)
- WYSIWYG Web page generators. Examples include:
- Netscape Navigator Gold or Composer (Windows 95/NT, Macintosh, and UNIX)
- Adobe PageMill (Windows 95/NT and Macintosh)
- Claris Home Page (Windows 95/NT and Macintosh)
- Site builders. Examples include:
- Macromedia Dreamweaver (Windows/PowerMac)
- NetObjects Fusion (Windows 95/NT and Macintosh)
- Microsoft FrontPage 98 (Windows 95/NT and Macintosh)
* A text editor for writing and saving scripts, such as.
- Wordpad.exe (comes with Windows 95/NT)
- SimpleText (Macintosh)
- BBEdit Lite (Macintosh)
- Programmer's File Editor (Windows 3.1/95/NT)
- TextPad (shareware for Windows 3.1/95/NT)
- Super NoteTab Lite (Windows 95/NT)
NOTE: The categories of authoring tools and editors above are somewhat vague and
arbitrary; Web page generators and site builders will both generate HTML for you,
but site builders are designed to build and manage entire Web sites. Netscape
Composer Navigator Gold is both a Web browser and a WYSIWYG page generator. HTML
Editors have some of the same functions as text editors, but have special features
to assist you in creating HTML. With the exception of some of the text editors
that are freeware, all of these are commercial products that cost money. Most
are inexpensive, but one or two have more lofty prices. In several cases, the
software provider makes available a limited free trial period before you have
to pay. Free trial copies of these products can also often be obtained at Internet
trade conferences on CD-ROM, or directly from the software producer. The software
can also be downloaded from the Internet. Here are some appropriate URLs:
