The Page Assignment

In the Page Assignment, we'll learn how to create web pages.

Session One: Starting Points

The Page Assignment has overlapping options. I've organized them by "Starting Points". Choose one of them, based on taking a look at my descriptions, below, and then follow the instructions which are found at the destinations. Then, use the class and listserv to ask questions.

Starting Point: Netscape Composer

See Part X (pp. 149-164) of the text for a Composer tutorial.

Netscape Composer (a part of Netscape Communicator 4) is a wonderful, free web page creation tool. This page contains links to many Composer tutorials. You'll be able to choose one, and take it, and by doing so, build your own home page.

  • AYR! Note to NEIU users: to publish your pages with Netscape, fill in this information when prompted to "fill in your own information here":
  • ftp://gamut.neiu.edu/home/staff/yourlogin/http/

    Options for using Netscape Composer.

Netscape offers three options: the 1) Wizard, the 2) Templates, and the 3) Blank Page options. Here are examples, which I created using each option. The idea is to start with something simple and fun, and then begin to improve and/or update it. To create your own, just use Netscape's File/New menu.

    The Wizard Option

  • Netscape Composer Wizard. The Composer wizard talks you through making a web page.

  •

    The Templates Option

  • The Instructional Technology Cybercenter (the ITC)
ETLT's resources for building pages using templates.
  • Netscape Composer Web Page Templates.
These templates make it easy to create a web page.
  • Example of Page Created with Netscape Composer Template
  • This was also very easy and fun to do.

Wonderful, Free Templates You Can Use

Create a Course Website with Templates, this site advertises, and it lives up to its claim. Highly recommended.

    A Page Built with Templates

Here is a web page built with a template:
  • Web 101 Web Site
  • That's right, I began building the web site for this course by using the main page of a web site created for another course I teach, entitled Music Concepts Online. Take a look and compare the two.

    Netscape Composer Blank Page option

    Composer Tutorial: Blank Page Option

This is a wonderful tutorial from Trinity University: highly recommended. AYR!

    The Page Quiz

    Once you've created a(some) page(s), take the
  • Page Quiz.

  • Then, revise and improve your page(s) and or work until you have the following (or its equivalent):

    How to Use FTP Software

    AYR!
    1) Make sure you know where your web pages and the related files
    (images, etc.) are.
    2) Use the Start menu to find FTP software (e.g. WSFTP or FTP-Lite
    or other).
    3) Login to the FTP software at NEIU by typing in "gamut.neiu.edu"
as the server name, and use your email login as
    4) With the server computer represented by one window, and your
computer represented by another window, select the appropriate
folders/directories in each window. For example, if my web pages
are in c:/lucas/web/music, then I click on folders, etc. until the
c:/lucas/web/music folder is open in the window which represents my
computer, and if I want to place the files in the main web folder on
the web computer, then I click until my http folder is open in the
window which represents the web computer.
    5) I select the files in the window which represents my computer
with my cursor, and I drag them into the window which represents the web
    computer.

Note: CuteFTP is an inexpensive, excellent FTP client which you can buy online.
