SPRING 2008 Q & A FOR STUDENTS USING BLACKBOARD

This document provides critical information for all Blackboard (Bb) users at NEIU.  Please read through this document to prepare for the Spring 2008 semester.  If you have any questions about NEIUport , NetIDs, e-mail, passwords or login procedures (including logging into Blackboard, please call 773-442-4230.  Student Computing Services provides technology assistance for NEIU students Student Computing Services (SCS) at (773) 442-4390.  The University Computing Help Desk can be reached at (773) 442-HELP (4357).

As part of NEIU’s effort to promote a single username (NetID) and password for students to access all NEIU electronic resources, Blackboard has been integrated into the campus portal and student information system so that a student’s NetID is also that student’s Blackboard username.

Students and faculty can now log into NEIUport (http://neiuport.neiu.edu) with their NetID and password and access Blackboard directly (without an additional login) by clicking the "Log into Bb" link on either the Faculty or Student Academic tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get enrolled into my Bb courses?

You are now automatically enrolled into your Bb courses from the student information system.  After you register with the touch tone registration, your information is entered into the student information system (CARS), which is fed twice daily into Blackboard.  Unfortunately, this does not happen instantly.  There is a short time lag between the time that you register and when you show up in the CARS system.

So, does that mean that I no longer have to self-enroll into my Bb courses.

That is precisely what it means.

How do I log into Bb?

The best way is to log into NEIUport (http://neiuport.neiu.edu) using your NetID and password, and click on the Blackboard icon in the upper right part of the page (looks like this:Blackboard).  This will take you directly into Bb without having to enter your NetID and password a second time.  You can also go to http://neiu.blackboard.com and enter your NetID and password to log in.

What if I forget or do not know my NetID or password?

Go to the NEIUport login page (http://neiuport.neiu.edu) and click the Look up your NetID and E-Mail Address link or the Reset your Password link.  You will nee to enter your University ID (eight digits) and your birth date (4 digits).

What if I get into Blackboard and cannot see one or more of my courses?

The most common reason for you not to see a course in Bb is that the instructor has not made the course available for students to view.  Before you call the Help Desk or Student Computing Services, you should make sure that your instructor has made the course available.  Other reasons for not showing up are that you either have just registered and are not yet showing up in the CARS system, you may have been dropped due to non-payment of fees, you may have an academic hold on your account, or there may be a data entry error in the system.

What if I have trouble with Blackboard or other technology issues?

If you have an issue with something inside a Blackboard course, you should contact your instructor.  If you are having trouble logging into NEIUport of Blackboard you can call the NEIUport help line at (773) 442-4230.  If you have other computer/technology questions or difficulties, you should contact the Help Desk at (773) 442-HELP (4357) or Student Computing Services at (773) 442-4390.  SCS has a nice getting started guide to Blackboard HERE.
