The Initial "ENgaging LAtino Communities for Education" (ENLACE) of the W.K.Kellogg Foundation

When ENLACE began at NEIU in 2000 as a planning grant, one of the schools involved in the partnership was Clemente High School. ENLACE connected with the Chicago Teachers’ Center of NEIU’s College of Education to support the school with grants and various initiatives, including GEAR UP (federal funds). The work has had some promising results, including the use of Motivational Interviewing and Adventure Education in lieu of punishment (see the policy brief: “Pairing Motivational Interviewing with Adventure-Challenge Education: A Promising Strategy for Improving High School Retention.” Another initiative that developed from this partnership called Play for Peace has been taking place ever since then.
