Fall and Summer 1A Terms
Graduate Credit: Possible

Computer Cartography is a practical course in which stuents learn to make good maps. Nearly all the tools used in the class are computer-based but the conventions and techniques are much like those long used by professional cartographers. The textbook is by Dent:Cartography: Thematic Design.

Students meet in a smart classroom in which there is a networked computer for each person. Generally, one thematic map type is discussed and assigned each week, for a total of approximately 10 maps produced through the term. These include pattern-fill, contour, 3D, line, inset, direction, text-heavy, color-heavy, proportional symbol, and scattered dot maps. Each has its special requirements so that it is not only attractive but also represents the mapped information correctly.

Maps turned in before the generous deadlines may be revised for more credit. There are two exams in addition to the near-weekly assignments. Assignments are posted on line simply by copying them to your NEIU directory.
