Students will learn how to produce a variety of thematic map types and print to paper or export for on-line publication.

GIS for Cartography

GIS programs are useful for making maps, particularly when a series of maps is required. Although the preparation of the spatial boundary layers and assembly of the attribute table may be very time consuming, creation of basic thematic maps is very quick and easy once that preparation is done.

One of the early assignments involves taking prepared boundary and attribute data and quickly making a proportional circle map, choroplethic map, scattered dot map and others. A variety of graphical tools, including a host of prepared scale bars, directional arrows, labeling, transparencies, balloon boxes, neat lines, backgrounds and image importing capabilities give the user some control over the appearance of the final map project.
