If you don't know these things, learn them soon, as these are fundamental skills which you will need throughout the term.

You should certainly know how to shut down Windows safely. This is not just a matter of snapping off the power switch, but shutting down (Start button, Shutdown).
To do this work at home you'll need to manage your desktop. You'll
need a connection through broadband (DSL or Cable), or dial-in
modem, and you may want to install an FTP program although you probably won't
need to. Academic computing will help you log in from home. Take a
blank disk and a student ID when you visit them.
