Tenure Track Position in Curriculum and Instruction for Secondary Education

Department:  The Department of Educational Inquiry and Curriculum Studies is home to programs in Educational Foundations, Inner City Studies Education, and Secondary Education. Whether seeing to complete initial Type 09 or Type 10 teaching certification, to expand their classroom repertoire, to become educators in alternative contexts, or to enhance their understanding of the historical, political and social underpinnings of education in and beyond the inner city, our students leave their work in our department uniquely prepared as reflective, collaborative, and transformative education professionals. The Secondary Education Program offers professional sequences for undergraduate students seeking initial 6-12 certification in Biology, English, History, or Math, or K-12 certification in Spanish, French, Art, or Music. The program also offers graduate coursework leading to a Master of Arts in Teaching plus certification or a Master of Science in Instruction in secondary English Language Arts.

Required Qualifications:  Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis on secondary education or earned doctorate in related field; at least three years of relevant teaching experience at the middle or high school level; and eligibility for Illinois teaching certification in at least one subject area offered by the program. Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse populations and ability to work collaboratively across K-12, university, and community settings are also required. Excellent written and oral communication skills are expected. ABD candidates with anticipated completion date prior to September 1, 2013, will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:  Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate coursework in secondary curriculum, methods, assessment and/or instructional technology, or experience supervising candidates in field experiences in secondary settings is preferred. Applicants should be familiar with program accreditation and teacher certification processes. Facility with technologies related to instruction and research is highly desired.

Responsibilities:  Faculty members are expected to engage in teaching, relevant scholarly activity, and service to the university, to the community and to their professional field. Teaching responsibilities may include courses in secondary education curriculum and methods, assessment, and discipline-specific methods, depending upon field of expertise, as well as supervision of candidates’ field experiences. Participation in program review and accreditation processes is expected.
