College of Education Undergraduate Program: Inner City Studies Education and Inner City Careers

People, Programs, Priorities
The Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) is a satellite facility of Northeastern Illinois University, located on the Southside of Chicago, approximately twenty-one miles southeast of the main campus. CCICS houses the Department of Educational Inquiry & Curriculum Studies Inner City Studies Education (EICS ICSE) program, an academic program within the College of Education. Through its interdisciplinary curricula, EICS ICSE examines the major social, political, economic, and cultural forces that impact inner city communities in America, and around the world. The program is committed to training and retraining persons who desire to live and/or work in the inner city. CCICS also offers a wide range of classes in the arts and sciences drawn from the university's General Education Program.

Northeastern Illinois University requires that students take a double major, major and a minor, or a manor and a set of cognate courses. The EICS ICSE academic program offers the following options:
  • Bachelor of Arts in Inner City Studies, with a second major/minor
  • Master of Arts in Inner City Studies
  • Minor in Inner City Careers
The Center also offers courses necessary to complete the university's General Education requirements.

How to Apply
Freshman: Interested high school graduates must submit an application fro admission, an application fee and have their official transcript or General Education Development (GED) scores and ACT scores sent directly from the issuing institution to the Office of Admissions, Records, Recruitment, and Retention (OARRR), Room 304, Center for Inner City Studies, 700 East Oakwood Boulevard, Chicago, IL 60653.

Transfer Students: Students with previous work from other colleges or universities must submit an application for admission, an application fee and have official transcripts sent directly from each college or university attended to OARRR at the address listed above.

Transfer students with less than 30 semester hours of college credit must submit high school transcripts in addition to the above requirements for transfer students.

Procedures for Admission: The following documents must be submitted to the OARRR before the registration deadline indicated for each term:
  • Completed admission application
  • Official high school transcript or GED scores
  • Official college/university transcript
  • Valid identification
  • ACT scores (if applicable)
  • DD214 (Veterans only)
  • Resident Alien Card (foreign students)
  • Application fee

Undergraduate Programs
Programs in Inner City Studies are offered at the Center for Inner City Studies.
Major in Inner City Studies Education for the Bachelor of Arts Degree
Required Courses:
  • EICS ICSE 103 Introduction to Inner City Studies (3 CH)
  • EICS ICSE 201 History and Culture of Ethnic Groups in America (3 CH)
  • EICS ICSE 301 Racism in Theory and Fact (3 CH)
  • EICS ICSE 302 The Inner City Community (3 CH)
  • EICS ICSE 303 Theory and Methodology in Ethnic Group Research (3 CH)
  • EICS ICSE 304 Communication in the Inner City (3 CH)
  • Electives (12 CH) Chosen in consultation with an advisor, from undergraduate course offerings in Inner City Studies Education.
Total: 30 CH
Inner City Studies Education majors must apply and be admitted to the College of Education by the time they have completed 60 hours.

Minor in Inner City Careers
This minor has been designed to meet the needs of non education majors as well as education majors who plan to work in inner city communities and schools. It will provide an opportunity for candidates who are committed to working within the inner city to address the issues that are relevant to understanding the community. It will afford candidates with contacts and avenues to best address the issues they may encounter. There is an additional benefit to Elementary Education majors who select this minor. Two of the minor's core courses, ICSE 326-Language Behavior in Inner City Communities (#CH) and ICSE 331-Literature of Ethnic Groups (3 CH) will contribute to a state certificate endorsement in language arts at the middle school level.
