NEIU Programs for Future Teachers of English in Illinois Secondary Schools

NEIU offers two programs for students interested in teaching English in area high schools:

1.  The Undergraduate Degree in English/Secondary Education

This program is for undergraduate students at NEIU pursuing their first BA degree.  Your program includes courses in General Education, Teacher Education, Educational Foundations, Reading and the “content,” of your major, which includes courses not only in English but also Linguistics, Media, and a hybrid course on Teaching Writing in Secondary Schools.  For the detailed list, see COURSE REQUIREMENTS.

2.  The Teacher Certification Program (TCP)

This program is for students who already have a BA degree.  EVEN if your BA degree is in some other discipline than English, you still must enroll in this program and pay the Graduate tuition costs.  Apart from General Education, the course requirements for TCP students and undergraduates in English/Secondary Ed are basically IDENTICAL.

As you will see on the page regarding General Education courses, undergraduates have more GenEd requirements than TCP students, but some special GenEd courses are required of all future teachers in secondary schools in Illinois.  My advice is to knock those off first (see A step by step guide after reading the COURSE REQUIREMENTS).
