Belize: Summer Archaeological
Field School
ANTH-352: Archaeological Methods (3 cr.)
May 25-June 22, 2004 (4 weeks)
This course will be held in an
archaeological field school/camp in Belize. Students will learn and
gain hands-on experience of the use of survey instruments, digging,
record keeping, laboratory analysis of artifacts and ecological
samples, and implications of these results for a broader understanding
of ancient Maya culture. The goal of this course is to provide hands-on
experience in recovering archaeological data in connection with
archaeological models and theories learned in the classroom. Four
days will be spent traveling, with the option to visit Tikal (a
UNESCO world heritage site) in Guatemala or to stay on one of the
Cayes off the coast of Belize.
WARNING: Fieldwork demands
a certain level of physical fitness; students will be carrying equipment,
supplies, food and water in addition to conducting physically strenuous
activities for several hours per day in the tropical heat. Neither
the camp nor the vehicles are air-conditioned.
Cost: $1,780 per student; includes international round-trip
airfare, lodging, local transportation, meals (except on weekends),
field expenses, international medical insurance, and program administration.
(Does not include NEIU tuition and applicable fees for the 3-credit
course, required health insurance or personal expenses);
Eligibility: NEIU students who have
fulfilled, or are currently fulfilling, prerequisites for the above

France: College of Business and Management Six-Week Program in
Clermont-Ferrand
May 17-June 25, 2004 (6 weeks)
This is an educational exchange
between NEIU and our partner school Universite d’Auvergne; students
will spend the term studying in France. The university is located
in the industrial city of Clermont-Ferrand at the foot of the extinct
Puy de Dôme volcano in the Auvergne region of central France;
Clermont-Ferrand is home to Michelin, International. Eligible students
will receive credit for COBM-385D: The European Business Environment
(3 credits). You will attend French language and business classes
and visit French cultural and business centers. On weekends, you
will have opportunities to travel to other European countries.
Cost:
$1,100 per student; includes round-trip international air fare,
a single dormitory room and meals in the university cafeteria. (Does
not include NEIU tuition and any applicable fees, required health
and international medical insurance, expenses for an optional tour
of Paris, or any personal travel and other expenses.)
Eligibility:
NEIU College of Business and Management students; non business students

China: An
International Study of Chinese Culture and Educational Practices
ECED-312: Teaching Strategies with Multicultural Groups (3 cr.)
May 29 - June 12, 2004 (15 days)
This study tour will include visits to educational
institutions, including an NEIU partner school, and historical and
cultural sites in Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou, China. The course
is designed to offer students an opportunity to explore Chinese
culture and educational practices. Participating students will be
able to develop intercultural competence—the ability to interpret
intentional communications and customs in cultural styles different
from their own. Cost: $1,580 per student; includes visa application
fee, international round-trip airfare, airport tax, hotel lodging
(double occupancy), some meals, transportation in China, entrances
to scheduled historical and cultural sites, international medical
insurance, and program administration fee. (Does not include NEIU
tuition and able fees for the three credit course, required health
insurance, or personal expenses);

The Netherlands:
Comparative Classroom Management Observation in Holland
ELED-319: Classroom Organization and Management (3 cr.)
June 3-14, 2004 (12 days)
The course will explore issues, problems and methods
of designing effective learning environments for students from diversified
social, cultural and educational backgrounds. While in Amsterdam,
the students will observe, participate, and have discussions with
Dutch teachers, principals, and students to compare the functions
of Dutch schools with American schools. The purpose of this program
is to develop within you an eclectic understanding of theories in
which you are able to maneuver cognitively and apply sound theories
successfully within the classroom.
Cost: $1,235 per student, which includes
international round-trip airfare, lodging in a villa (6 people per
villa), shuttle service from/to airport, bike rentals from/to schools,
international student I. D. card and medical insurance, and program
administration. (Does not include NEIU tuition and fees for the
three credit course, meals, or personal expenses);

Jamaica: Investigation of
Caribbean Culture, Education, and Family
July 3 - 17, 2004
Students must register for one of the following
Summer II courses:
ECED-405: Perspectives in Early Childhood Education (3 cr.) OR
ECED-312: Teaching Strategies with Multicultural Groups (3cr.) OR
SWK-330: Social Work Practice in Community Settings (3 cr.)
This study tour has been designed for social workers, counselors,
and teachers at all levels, as well as majors/scholars interested
in aspects of the Caribbean. Participants will have the opportunity
to interact with host nationals, visit schools, explore social services,
and study the culture and traditions of the island while experiencing
the tropical breezes and historical landmarks.
Cost: $1,235 per student, which includes
roundtrip international airfare, fourteen nights of lodging in dormitory
setting (double occupancy) at Moneague College in Ocho Rios, two
overnights in an hotel (double occupancy), transportation while
in Jamaica for tour related travel, entrance fees for scheduled
field visits/excursions, guest lectures, most meals, travel insurance
and program administration fees;
Eligibility: Education majors and
Social Work majors/minors.
Program Size: 15 students per each

Poland:
The Economic Transition in Poland
ECON-319P: Current Economic Problems in Poland (3 cr.)
June 14 - 24, 2004 The course focus on
the economic and social problems involved with the transition from
a socialist economy to a market economy. In addition to visiting
economic and government institutions, NEIU students and faculty
will visit and have discussions with students, faculty and administrators
in the Warsaw School of Economics, the University of Warsaw, and
Giedroyc College of Communication and Media. This program will enable
the students to explain the main Polish views on the transition
process, and expound on the successes and failures of the transition
process.
WARNING: This study tour will require strenuous
walking. All participants will be responsible for carrying their
own luggage throughout the trip. This requires and adequate level
of physical fitness.
Cost: $1,650—$1,280 per student (to be determined);
includes roundtrip international airfare, hotel lodging
(double occupancy), breakfasts, 4 lunches/dinners, ground transportation
in Poland, international travel insurance, and program administration
fees;
Eligibility: Economics majors/minors
or permission of Dr. Stuart;

Tanzania: Marangu Teacher College Exchange
Program
ECED-312: Teaching Strategies with Multicultural
Stategies (3 cr.)
July 24 - August 9, 2004 The course
will explore the variety of cultural values that children bring
to the classroom and the teacher's role in enhancing each child's
learning experience. The study trip will give students opportunities
to observe classroom practices and interact with Tanzanian students,
teachers and children so as to increase their understanding of multicultural
teaching strategies. Students will be able to broaden their perspectives
on multicultural education and develop abilities to work with children
from many different cultures.
Cost: $3,000 per student, which
includes roundtrip international airfare, costs for college dormitory
and hotel lodging (double occupancy), most meals, ground transportation
while abroad, travel insurance and program administration fees;
