Chicago is surrounded by nature preserves and natural areas The map to the left shows the location of some. At the moment it is not hyperlinked -- clicking on the icons does not go to their web pages.

Student UnionThe social core of campus is the Student Union, which has a glass walled reading room with comfortable chairs, an excellent cafeteria, a coffee and bakery cafe, Beck's Bookstore and card shop, a game room, and many conference rooms for club meetings, parties, etc. Village Crossing, at the intersection of the hallways, is the information center. It also is where you get your student ID. Outside the Union there are many open areas and seating areas for studying, relaxing, eating, or meeting with friends. P.E. BuildingThe Physical Education Building, located on the Southern end of campus, has an olympic sized pool, a large weight room, racquetball courts, tennis courts, aerobics rooms, two large gymnasiums, ping pong, and an elevated running track. Access to the building is free to students, who can also take advantage of personal trainers at no cost. There are hours where family members can also use the facilities. LibraryThe Ronald Williams Library, just across the way from the Science Building, is a Government Repository for documents and also holds professional journal subscriptions for all discipines, and is part of a consortium of universities across Illinoi. They have an excellent web page which makes document searching very easy. The library also holds a video library, a classroom, computer lab, conference rooms, study rooms, and the center for faculty development. PrairieThe University prides itself on the campus vegetation, including large areas of restored prairie, including a Swamp White Oak Prairie Savanna. The department of G&ES helps to maintain these prairies with periodic controlled burns. The Department also created and maintains a GIS project for Facilities Management, by which they manage their inventory of more than 1,000 woody trees and shrubs. ParkingNEIU is a commuter campus, so parking is important. A new three-story parking garage is now under construction west of the library. This additional parking will make it possible to replace most of the large lot between the Science Building and the Library, and the roadway north of the Science Building, with attractive sidewalks, lighting, and grassy areas. One-day parking tickets are available for $5 at the ticket machine near the southwest corner of the main lot. ClubsNEIU has more than 70 active clubs and student organizations which are funded by student fees. Several new clubs with geographic and environmental interests have been created in recent years, and *** add more about SLUG and GeoManiacs, etc. BughouseBughouse is a conferencing board which was actually written by a G&ES student, Cameron Rex, in 2003. Use is restricted by password to the NEIU community; participants may take on an alias and avatar and join in candid discussions which cover virtually any and all topics. G&ES professor Erick Howenstine is Faculty Advisor, and oversees the paid student moderator. |
