Blackboard Update - 08/28/2006

STUDENT ENROLLMENT

As a result of the recent migration to Blackboard 7.1, the default system setting for student enrollment options was changed from Self Enroll to Instructor / System Administrator Enroll without our knowledge.  The Instructor /System Administrator enrollment option requires the student to send an email request to the instructor in order to be allowed access to the enrollment option, while Self Enroll allows students to enroll themselves in Blackboard courses via the course catalog, unless another option is specifically chosen by the instructor.

As soon as we were alerted to the problem, we reset the default settings to Self Enroll; however, you should check your course settings—particularly if you receive word from your students that they are having difficulty enrolling in your course.

To set the enrollment option to Self Enrollment:

  1. Log in to your Blackboard course and go to the Control Panel

  2. Select Settings (under Course Options)

  3. Select Enrollment Options

  4. Choose Self Enrollment

  5. Click the Submit button

All new Blackboard courses created after today have the Self Enroll option as default.  We apologize for any inconvenience to you or your students.

Browser Issues
http://west.wwu.edu/atus/blackboard/browser.shtml

  • Firefox - cutting and pasting in WYSIWYG text windows. This is a firefox issue for security purposes. See “Firefox Cut/Paste Fix bleow to find out how to apply the fix/workaround. Or use IE (Windows machines) or Safari (Macs).
  • Safari bug - Using Safari will cause you to post blank messages in the Discussion Forums. There is not yet a fix for this from Blackboard so we recommend Mac users use Firefox.
  • Safari editing - if you do not have the latest Java plug-in installed in your browser (it may prompt you to install this) you will have problems updating material on Blackboard. Make sure you have the latest browser and plug-ins.
  • IE Browsers - "click to activate and use this control": This affects Flash, Adobe Reader, QuickTime, Windows Media and Sun Java Virtual (i.e. Blackboard) machine controls within a web page. Read more and download the fix at

Firefox Cut/Paste Fix
http://west.wwu.edu/atus/blackboard/firefoxcutpaste.shtml

Firefox has a security "enhancement" to protect users' private information that prevents unprivileged scripts from doing a Cut, Copy, or Paste command in the Mozilla rich text editor. Blackboard uses the rich text editor, so you will not be able to use the cut-paste commands without doing a modification to Firefox.

To modify Firefox to allow Cut/Paste in Blackboard:

  1. Quit Firefox (you may want to open this page in another browser). If you have Quick Launch running (in Windows, an icon in the toolbar), quit that too.
  2. Download user.js at http://west.wwu.edu/atus/blackboard/resources/user.js and Save as:
    • On Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows login>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<the folder>.
    • On Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/xxxxxxxx.default/ (where xxxxxxxx is some random text)
  3. Restart Firefox and go to Blackboard. You should now be able to use the cut and paste windows.
