GENERAL CODE OF CONDUCT

Northeastern Illinois University’s Educational Talent Search Program and Project Upward Bound define the following conduct as accepted and preferred practices for students and chaperones during any event sponsored or supervised by Educational Search Program or Project Upward Bound. Violations of the Code of Conduct will be deemed a threat to the general welfare of that event. Participants who do not comply with the Code of Conduct will be excluded from the event and potentially, from future events as well. Moreover, persons who engage in behavior that is illegal will be handed over to law enforcement personnel.

SECTION 1: GENERAL GUIDELINES

1.00 Students will neither engage in, nor aid, or entice another into any disorderly conduct or breach of the peace on any Educational Talent Search Program/Project Upward Bound or host facility owned or controlled facility or vehicle, or at any Educational Talent Search Program/Project Upward Bound or host facility sponsored or supervised activity.

1.01 Students will not physically or verbally assault, directly or implicitly, any other participant, Educational Talent Search Program/Project Upward Bound staff, or host facility personnel or guest. Doing so at any time will result in the exclusion of that person from the activity. Students also acknowledge that assault (physical or verbal) is a violation of applicable federal, state and local laws.

1.02 Students will comply with the directions of the Senior Staff and host facility personnel acting in reasonable performance of their duties, and will provide personal identification (name, etc.) upon request.

1.03 Students will neither cause nor assist in the coercion, physical abuse or detention of any person at or on any Educational Talent Search Program/Project Upward Bound or host facility owned or controlled property or vehicle, or at any Educational Talent Search Program/Project Upward Bound or host facility sponsored or supervised function. Any behavior that endangers anyone’s health or safety is also prohibited and may be a violation of applicable federal, state and local laws.

1.04 Students will not be involved with theft or damage to property owned or controlled by Educational Talent Search Program/Project Upward Bound, the host facility, or members and guests of Educational Talent Search Program/Project Upward Bound or the host facility. Students acknowledge that doing so is a violation of applicable federal, state and local laws.

1.05 Students will neither possess nor use or distribute controlled substances.

1.06 Students will neither possess nor use or distribute alcoholic beverages.

1.07 Students will neither possess nor use or distribute narcotics or other illegal drugs while partaking in this event, and acknowledge that doing so is a violation of applicable federal, state and local laws.

1.08 Students will neither possess nor use or distribute cigarettes, cigars or pipes.

1.09 Students will neither possess nor use dangerous, disruptive or illegal instruments or objects while partaking in this event.

1.10 Students are required to wear attire that is appropriate for this activity. Clothes that contain inappropriate, obscene, or profane words and illustrations are prohibited. Gang-related clothing (hats, colors, insignia, etc.) is also prohibited. Students wearing or displaying inappropriate clothing or accessories will be excluded from this event.

1.11 Young Men may wear dress or casual pants and shirts, sweaters, etc. Belts or suspenders must be worn at all times so pants do not sag below the waistline. Only proper swimming trunks will be permitted in the pool and pool area. Short pants are not substitutes for swimming trunks.

1.12 Young Women may wear dress or casual skirts, dresses or pants and blouses, sweaters, etc. Belts or suspenders must be worn at all times so pants do not sag below the waistline. Attire that is excessively revealing (e.g., miniskirts, tube tops, tank tops, etc.) is inappropriate and may not be worn. Swimsuits must be one piece.

1.13 Students will respect themselves, each other, all program staff members, and the staff members of all facilities and vehicles used by Educational Talent Search Program and Project Upward Bound in conjunction with this event. To that end, profanity and obscene gestures may not be used at any time.

1.14 Students may not leave the group without permission or alone, and are required to limit themselves to items on the itinerary. Unscheduled stops are not permitted.

1.15 Students may not bring their children on this trip.

SECTION 2: BUSGUIDELINES

2.00 Everyone is required to follow the directions of the bus driver as they are for our safety.

2.01 All passengers are required to retain their assigned seats throughout the trip, and remain seated while the bus is in motion.

2.02 Female and male students may not sit together.

2.03 Students may listen to music on the bus, but headphones must be worn at all times so as not to disturb others. Music that contains profane, sexually explicit, or otherwise offensive lyrics is prohibited. If you are in doubt about the appropriateness of a tape or CD, please ask a member of the Senior Staff before playing it. Such material may be confiscated and not returned until the end of the trip.

2.04 Everyone is responsible for the cleanliness of her or his immediate area. The bus will be equipped with trash bags that must be used for your garbage.

2.05 Only water should be consumed on the motor coach as other beverages may stain the seats. Most foods are forbidden on the bus. Do not eat or drink anything unless permission is given by the bus driver.

2.06 Care must be exercised when using the overhead storage compartments. Do not slam the doors or force them shut. You and your parents/guardians will be financially responsible for any damage to the motor coach.

2.07 The motor coach restroom should only be used in extreme emergency situations. Because it is difficult to completely remove the smell, “solids” are particularly to be avoided. Whenever possible, use the restroom only at our stops. If you feel the onset of an emergency, notify a staff member immediately so the driver can stop the bus.

SECTION 3: HOTELGUIDELINES

3.00 Students may not congregate or socialize in the corridors of the hotel as doing so disturbs other hotel patrons and reflects poorly on you, our university and our programs. Social gatherings must be confined to the lobby or other designated spaces.

3.01 Running, yelling and other disruptive behavior is prohibited on hotel premises.

3.02 Noise levels in the hotel rooms must not filter into the corridors as that too disturbs other patrons and reflects poorly on us.

3.03 Male and female students may not visit each other’s rooms regardless of the age of the students.

3.04 Students may not have outside visitors in their hotel rooms at any time, regardless of the age of the student, or guest. This applies to friends and relatives who live in or near the area where activities are being held.

3.05 Students and their parents/guardians are financially responsible for phone calls originating from students’ hotel rooms. To avoid being charged, please carefully read the instructions regarding the use of the phone. Use telephone cards, cell phones or pay phones whenever possible as hotels charge excessively for the use of their telephones.

3.07 Students are not to give their telephone numbers or room numbers to strangers for any reason.

3.08 Students should not open their doors for strangers for any reason, regardless of who the stranger claims to be.

3.09 Pay per view movies are not to be ordered and watched at any time.

3.10 There will be room checks each night at lights out. Students must be in the rooms assigned to them at lights out, and are not to leave their assigned rooms for the rest of the night.

If the hotel reports missing items, you will be billed according to the room assignment list, and you and your parents/guardians will have to pay for those items.

SECTION 4: RESIDENCE HALL GUIDELINES

4.00 Students may not congregate or socialize in the corridors of the dormitory as we may not be the only group on the floor or in the building. Disturbing other guests reflects poorly on you, our programs, and Northeastern Illinois University. Social gatherings must be confined to designated spaces such as activity and meeting rooms.

4.01 Running, yelling and other disruptive behavior is prohibited in the dormitories.

4.02 Male and female students may not visit each other’s rooms regardless of the age of the students.

4.03 There will be room checks each night at lights out, and students must be in the rooms assigned to them. Students are not to leave their assigned rooms until wake-up the following morning.

4.04 At wake-up each morning, students must get up, get dressed and go to breakfast. Students may not stay in their rooms or remain on the dorm floor without staff supervision. There are no exceptions.

4.05 Occasionally, students may have to leave their rooms to use the restroom in the middle of the night. If an emergency does arise, go only to the restroom, and return immediately to your room. Do not leave the floor or the building, visit other students, or stop at vending machines.

4.06 Students are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of their rooms and for picking up after themselves in the shared restrooms. We do not wish to receive complaints from the university at which we are staying. If complaints are received, noncompliant students may be sent home.

4.07 Students may not have outside visitors in their dorm rooms at any time, regardless of the age of the student, or guest. This policy applies to friends and relatives who live near the campus we visit.

4.08 Students and their parents/guardians are financially responsible for phone calls originating from their dorm rooms. Calls to other parts of the campus are usually free. Off-campus calls are not. To avoid being charged, please carefully read the instructions regarding the use of telephones. Use pay phones, cell phones or telephone cards whenever possible.

4.09 Do not use the telephone to make harassing calls to other dormitory guests including other Northeastern participants. Doing so will cause you to be sent home.
