M.A. in Counseling: School Counseling
The Department of Counselor Education offers a 48 hour program (16 courses) leading to the Master of Arts in Counseling: School Counseling. The School Counseling program prepares one for employment as a school counselor in elementary, middle, and high schools. Graduates of the School Counseling program are eligible to apply for and obtain Type 73 certification upon successful completion of the Guidance component of the Basic Skills Test. In addition, new Illinois State Board of Education guidelines have been implemented to allow non-certified teachers to apply for admission to the School Counseling sequence and, upon graduation obtain Type 73 endorsement as a school counselor. Non-certified teachers include those who do not hold a current, valid Illinois teaching certificate. Non-certified teachers seeking admission to the School Counseling program will need to satisfy additional requirements prior to admission to the program.
