Working as a Community Counselor

What do community counselors do?

Community counselors work with individuals, couples, families, and sometimes communities.  They often work toward the prevention of problems, and help to set up prevention programs in communities.  They also advocate for social change to help their clients and the community at large.

Where do community counselors work?

Community counselors are trained to work in a variety of settings including:

  • Community mental health and/or family services agencies

  • Hospitals and schools

  • Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)

  • Private business and industry

  • Behavioral health agencies including substance abuse programs and training and evaluation centers

  • Private practice

  • Insurance companies
