Dr. Tony Adams is the Graduate Director and Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication, Media and Theatre at Northeastern Illinois University. He received an Associate’s degree from Danville Area Community College (Danville, IL), a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale), and a Doctorate from the University of South Florida (Tampa). He studies and teaches about interpersonal and family communication, qualitative research, communication theory, and sex, gender, and sexuality. His first book, Narrating the Closet: An Autoethnography of Same Sex Desire (2011), received the 2012 National Communication Association (NCA) Ethnography Division Best Book Award, the 2013 “Book of the Year” award from NCA’s GLBTQ Division and the Caucus on LGBTQ Concerns, and the 2012 Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender Outstanding Book Award. He co-edited, with Stacy Holman Jones and Carolyn Ellis, the Handbook of Autoethnography (2013), and also has two forthcoming books: On (Writing) Families: Autoethnographies of Presence and Absence, Love and Loss (co-edited with Jonathan Wyatt) and Autoethnography (co-authored with Carolyn Ellis and Stacy Holman Jones).
