What can I expect from tutoring?
A student who comes prepared with specific questions will have those inquiries addressed. Also, the tutor will present study strategies for the particular subject area and general study skills.
Since tutors are selected based on their academic success and knowledge in the discipline, they will be able to assist the student with concepts. Also, the tutors will be able to share the study system that has helped them succeed. Tutors receive training throughout the year to improve their tutoring techniques and learn new study strategies. Individual or group sessions are also available with the Coordinating Specialist to address the student’s desire to improve study skills.
What should I do before I see the tutor?
Put forth effort to attend the lectures and complete the readings and assignments for the course before you come to tutoring
Bring all books, notes, handouts and assignment sheets related to the course to the tutoring session
Come prepared with questions on the material that you need further help understanding
Expect the tutor to assist further understanding of material but not to make up for any lack of effort on your part
If you realize that this subject presents a challenge for you, schedule a regular weekly appointment from the beginning of the semester
What will a tutor not be able to do for me?
A tutor is not able to do the course work, provide specific answers to test questions or complete an assignment. In general, a tutor can not be a substitute for a student’s responsibility to attend class, to complete assigned readings and make an effort to understand the material in the course. Together, tutor and student can develop a better understanding of the knowledge presented in the course and an improved approach to independent learning.
What can I do to improve my study strategies?
I analyze the syllabus / reading schedules for each course and determine my reading/study rate for each text.
I create a study schedule, post it and follow it. I schedule my semester, my week and my day.
I use reading and study strategies such as KWL+, SQ3/4R, etc.
I know how to skim and scan text.
I highlight, take notes, annotate text when I read. I never study read without writing.
I use a note taking system, such as the Cornell System, to combine my lecture notes and text notes to make connections.
I take time to review my notes and summarize them after each lecture.
I use “mind maps” when visualizing information.
I know the type of test that will be given in each course and create self tests, both objective and subjective.
I know how to choose and participate in a productive study group.
I visit the instructor during office hours .
I seek out the help of a tutor and attend sessions with questions.
