Faculty Training Materials

Bringing Prevention Into The Classroom

Purpose

A major component of any Curriculum Infusion program is faculty training.  This set of materials enables institutions to carry out faculty training to infuse substance abuse prevention content across the curriculum.  After completing this training, faculty will have a background in several key areas and a draft of a prevention module for the course they intend to teach.

Format

This training material includes:

The materials address five central topics:

Tape#1-KeyConcepts(32minutes)  This tape provides information that the Network believes faculty need before they begin to develop prevention content for their courses.  Information is provided on substance abuse on the college campus, prevention strategies, and teaching to diverse student populations.

Tape#2-Designing the Course Module (29 minutes)  With the aid of a facilitator, this tape leads the faculty through the process of developing prevention content for their courses.  The two basic concepts covered by this tape are instructional design and evaluation of Curriculum Infusion.

The Facilitators Guide leads the facilitator through the videos, discussions, and activities for this training.  With the video tapes, it covers the five essential topic areas.

The Narrative Sections are provided as supporting material to the five central topics covered by the videos.  These sections provide text, discussion questions, and activities.

The Overheads and Handouts support the material in the Narrative sections, but may be used with the Facilitator's Guide at your discretion.  These pages are intended as "masters" and may be copied as needed.  The Overheads and Handouts enhance the video presentation and also allow for a variety of presentation formats.

Timing

The time available for faculty training varies by campus. Ideally these materials will be covered in 6-8 hours of workshops for a small group of faculty.  The entire training can be completed in one day or broken into shorter sessions.  The sections covered in the first video, Key Concepts, are more independent than Tape #2, so they may be planned for shorter sessions.  The second video, Designing the Course Module, should be completed in one session lasting 3-5 hours.
