Time line for Application/Admission

This should be considered a general guide for applicants. It is important that an applicant considering medical school consult with his or her pre-health advisor to devise a schedule that works for the individual.

 

 

COLLEGE YEAR 1     

·       Fall semester

o      Meet pre-health advisor and investigate pre-health advisory program

o      As applicable, ensure that pre-health advisor receives course directors' evaluations

o      Successfully complete first-semester required premedical coursework and other degree requirements.

·       Spring semester

o      Visit "Considering a Career in Medicine" Web site www.aamc.org/students/considering

o       Identify summer employment/volunteer medically related opportunities

o       Successfully complete second-semester required premedical coursework and other degree requirements

o       Ensure that pre-health advisor receives course directors' evaluations

SUMMER 1

      • Complete summer employment / volunteer medically related experience.
      • Attend summer school, if necessary.

COLLEGE YEAR 2              

        • Fall semester
          • Check in with pre-health advisor and participate in pre-health activities
          • Investigate available volunteer/paid medically related clinical or research activities
          • Successfully complete first-semester required premedical coursework and other degree requirements
          •  Ensure that pre-health advisor receives course directors' evaluations .
        • Spring semester
          • Check in with pre-health advisor and participate in pre-health activities.
          • Participate in volunteer/paid medically related clinical or research activities
          • Identify summer employment/volunteer medically related opportunities
          • Successfully complete second-semester required premedical coursework and other degree requirements
          • Ensure that pre-health advisor receives course directors' evaluations.

SUMMER 2 

·       Complete summer employment/volunteer medically related experience.

·       Participate in a summer health careers program, if available. 

·       Attend summer school, if necessary

COLLEGE YEAR 3       

·       Fall semester

o      Check in with pre-health advisor and participate in pre-heatth activities

o      Continue participation in volunteer/paid medically related activities

o      Investigate:

§       Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) Web site www.aamc.org/mcat

§       Information about the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) fee assistance on the AAMC Fee Assistance Program Web site www.aamc.org/fap, as appropriate

§       AAMCs "Applying to Medical School" Web site www.aamc.orgistudents/applyingistart.htm

§       As applicable, information for students from groups underrepresented in medicine on the AAMC Minorities in Medicine Web site www.aamc.orgistudentsiminoritiesistart.htm

 

o      Begin preparation for spring MCAT administration

o      Successfully complete first-semester required premedical coursework and other degree requirements

o      Ensure that prehealth advisor receives course directors' evaluations.

·       Spring semester

o      Consult regularly with prehealth advisor regarding:

§       Schedule for completion of school-specific requirements for advisor/committee evaluation.

§       Advice about medical education options

o      Continue participation in volunteer/paid medically related activities

o      Prepare for spring MCAT administration

o       Continue review of medical education options

o       Take spring MCAT

COLLEGE YEAR 3

o      Investigate information about the:

o      Successfully complete second-semester required premedical coursework and other degree requirements

o      Ensure that pre-health advisor receives course directors' evaluations

 

SUMMER 3

·       Participate in a summer health careers program, if available.

·       Complete AMCAS application.

·       Take summer MCAT

·       Attend summer school, if necessary.

·       Investigate:

COLLEGE YEAR 4.      

·       Fall semester

o      Complete supplementary application materials for schools applied to

o      Consult regularly with pre-health advisor regarding:

§       Completion of school-specific requirements for advisor/committee evaluation, 

§       Status of application/admission process at medical schools applied to

o      Continue participation in volunteer/paid medically related activities

o      Interview at medical schools

o      Continue review of medical education options

o      Investigate:

§       Financial aid forms required by school of interest with the AAMC Financial Aid Forms Required by Medical Schools searchable database http://service5.aamc.org/msar_reports/

o      Successfully complete first-semester elective science and non-science coursework and other degree requirements

o      Ensure that pre-health advisor receives course directors' evaluations.

·       Spring semester

o      Make interim and final decision about medical school choice

o      Immediately notify medical schools that you will not be attending

o      Ensure that all IRS forms are submitted as early as possible I

o      Successfully complete second-semester elective science and non-science coursework and other

o      degree requirements

o      Graduate

SUMMER 4

o      Prepare for medical school enrollment: purchase books and equipment and make appropriate living arrangements

o      Relax and prepare for medical school

o      Attend orientation programs and matriculate in to medical school
