Dr. Balsara has made extensive changes made in his curriculum to expose both undergraduate and graduate students to technology used in the business world. Graduate Finance (FINA 402) students were required to use the Compustat database to retrieve company financial data to be used in an n Excel-based project. In addition, they were asked to present their findings to the rest of the class using PowerPoint.

PARTNERS EDUCATE FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS

Northeastern Illinois University, College of Business and Management, Chicago, IL and l'Institut Universitaire Professionnalise of l'Universite d'Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, France have a partnership to facilitate learning experiences for students from both universities.

French Students Immerse into Chicago Business Community

This year, as has become an annual happening over the past five years, the College of Business and Management has been privileged to host a group of students from our partner school, l'Institut Universitaire Professionnalise in Clermont-Ferrand, France.  The four French students completed internships with local Chicago organizations as a way to study business practices in this country as well as live in the American culture and practice using their English language skills.

Sandra Doukhopelnikoff worked in a variety of areas with the Albany Park Community Center.  APCC is a non profit organization that serves the very diverse surrounding community by providing a large variety of resources for people in terms of housing and job information resources and programs for youth.  Her responsibilities were in the areas of Marketing, Development and Human Resources.

Guillaume Giroux assisted in projects for Edgewater Development Council

Mathieu Gomes worked at Midco International, a manufacturing company that makes and distributes commercial heating and cooking equipment.  He worked on a Human Resources Project examining and redoing job descriptions for the company to create some consistency in positions.

Matthieu Specht served his internship at Labelmaster, a company that distributes and does some manufacturing of safety products, especially signage and labeling.  His project was a study of competitors for the Marketing department.

At a recent luncheon held at NEIU, all of the internship organizations were full of praise for the outstanding performance of these individuals, who are seen as representatives of both UPI and NEIU.

Nine COBM Students Enjoy Learning Experience in France

The program included daily lessons in French and classes about business in France.  There were also numerous field trips to visit businesses and attractions in the area.  The students lived in the dormitory with students from other schools in a variety of countries who have partnered with the Universite d'Auvergne.

Every weekend began at noon on Friday and ended at noon on Monday.  Because of these long weekends most students took advantage of being in France and travelled to other countries in Europe.  Some students have went to Italy, Spain, England, The Netherlands, Poland, and Greece.  In addition, some of the students took advantage of being in Europe by staying for some additional time after the six weeks at Clermont were over.  Some spent an additional one to two weeks; others have spent the rest of the summer in various countries.

Dr. Roger Reinsch, Professor of Business Law, escorted the students to France.  The common theme about the experience that Dr. Reinsch hears in feedback from returning students is that it "was awesome".

Students that participated in the Summer 2007 experience include:  Anna Argyropoulos, Batzaya Batochir, Michal Gawecki, Maria Jacome, Vani Khanna, Angel Limon, Eva Rosado, Mary Vavouliotis, and David Williams.

The program itself is relatively inexpensive and a very good educational experience.  It serves to strengthen the goals of providing an international perspective for the students of the COBM.  The requirements for participation are that the student has completed his/her foundation courses in the COBM, students who are business majors receive priority.
