Calculating Your Foundation GPA

College of Business and Management policy states, “to officially declare a business major or minor or enroll in 300-level business courses, you must have completed the eight Foundation Courses with a grade of “C” or better in each course AND have achieved a Foundation grade point average of 2.50 or higher.”  In addition, the General Education Requirement must be complete and a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher must be achieved.

To calculate your Foundation GPA, divide the total number of Quality Points from the Foundation Courses by the total number of credit hours.  The eight Foundation Courses total 25 credit hours, with a maximum of 100 quality points possible.  Students need a total of 63 grade points to achieve the minimum Foundation GPA of 2.50 (63 divided by 25 = 2.52 GPA).  The table below can assist in calculating your total Foundation grade points, total Foundation credit hours, and Foundation GPA.

Only grades of “C” or better are accepted by the College of Business and Management. Courses must be repeated when grades of “D” or “F” are earned.  Grades of “I” are NOT considered completion of a course.

EXAMPLE*:

To maintain a Foundation GPA of 2.50 or higher, the current Foundation GPA must be:

1 course remaining   – 2.545

2 courses remaining – 2.632

3 courses remaining – 2.750

4 courses remaining – 3.00

If you do not achieve the minimum required Foundation GPA of 2.50, you will be required to repeat Foundation Courses until the minimum required Foundation GPA (2.50) is achieved.  Failure to complete the Foundation Requirement by achieving the minimum required Foundation GPA results in restriction from all 300-level business courses until the Foundation Requirement is fulfilled.

GPAs are NOT rounded.

Calculating Your Cumulative GPA

To calculate your cumulative GPA (grade point average) you must first determine the Quality Points (grade points).  This is the total of credit hours for each course multiplied by the numeric value for the grade received in the course.

The GPA hrs (grade point hours) is the number of NEIU credit hours that are counted in calculating the GPA or the total number of credit hours attempted at NEIU.  Credit hours for grades of “W” are not calculated in the GPA.  Credit hours for grades of “F” are calculated in the GPA.  While only the most recent grade is calculated in the cumulative GPA, all grades earned always appear on the transcript.

The GPA is calculated by dividing Quality Points by the corresponding GPA hrs.

EXAMPLE*:

Course             Credit hours    Grade

Class 101             3.00              A                   4 x 3 = 12

Class 102             3.00              B                   3 x 3 = 9

Class 103             3.00              C                   2 x 3 = 6

Class 104             3.00              D                   1 x 3 = 3

Class 105             3.00              F                   0 x 3 = 0

Total                   15.00                                       30.00

*Example does not consider transferred courses.  Transfer credits are not calculated in the cumulative GPA.

Only courses taken at NEIU are included in the calculation of the cumulative GPA; however, equivalent transfer courses are included in the calculation of the Foundation GPA and Major GPA.

To graduate, a GPA of 2.50 or higher must be achieved in all business major and/or minor courses.  Business majors must also achieve a Cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher.

GPAs are NOT rounded.

**Transfer courses which are assessed as equivalent to Foundation Courses are included in the calculation of the Foundation GPA; however, they are not included in the calculation of the cumulative GPA.
