Applications are invited for the following two tenure-track faculty positions:
Developmental Biologist
The Department of Biology at Northeastern Illinois University
invites applications for a tenure-track position at the ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
level to begin September 2012. We
seek a candidate who is using innovative and interdisciplinary approaches that
address basic or applied developmental problems in animals from an evolutionary
perspective.
The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to
excellence in teaching, experience with and/or a commitment to using and
developing innovative teaching methods, and the ability to engage graduate and
undergraduate students in research.
Primary teaching responsibilities will include developmental biology and other
advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialization; the
new hire will also be expected to contribute to teaching cell biology and
general biology. In addition to
teaching and maintaining an active research program, the successful candidate
will also be expected to collaborate with NEIU’s Student Center for Science
Engagement and other NEIU units to enhance our students’ preparation for
post-baccalaureate studies, and to participate in service to the department,
college and university. An earned
doctorate in developmental biology or a related field is required; teaching
experience is desirable, but not required.
Northeastern Illinois University is a comprehensive state
university of approximately 12,000 commuter students located on the northwest
side of Chicago and is recognized as having one of the most ethnically diverse
student bodies in the Midwest.
To apply for the position, please
submit a single, electronic PDF that contains the following materials in the
following order: (1) a cover letter describing your interest in the
position; (2) a current curriculum vitae; (3) a teaching statement that
describes your teaching experience and philosophy, plans for a developmental
biology course, and a list of courses (at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels) you feel qualified to teach; (4) a research statement that includes
current and future research goals and plans and their relevance to this
position; (5) a diversity statement that describes your experience with diverse
populations of students and the importance of diversity in teaching and research
communities; and (6) an unofficial copy of graduate transcripts.
Send the complete PDF to
Biology@neiu.edu.
In addition, please provide three
reference letters that address both research and teaching potential as they
relate to this position. Letters
should be submitted as PDFs directly to Dr. John Kasmer (Department Chair) at
Biology@neiu.edu.
Review of applications will begin on 15
November 2011, and continue until position is filled.

Women and minority candidates are especially
encouraged to apply. AA/EOE.
Vertebrate Zoologist / Anatomy and Physiology
The Department of Biology at Northeastern Illinois
University (NEIU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR level to begin September 2012. We seek a candidate with
expertise and experience in the anatomy, physiology, or whole-organism systems
biology of vertebrates. The area of specialization is open, and could include
vertebrate or comparative anatomy, histology, biomechanics, or comparative
physiology. However, it is essential that the candidate be able to help develop
and teach a two-semester, cadaver-based course in human anatomy and physiology.
The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to excellence in
teaching, experience with and/or a commitment to using and developing innovative
teaching methods, and the ability to engage graduate (M.S. level) and
undergraduate students in research. Teaching expectations will include the
cadaver-based Human Anatomy & Physiology sequence (mentioned above), as well as
General Biology and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of
specialization. The ability to teach a course involving a major group of animals
is desirable, but not required. In addition to teaching and maintaining an
active research program, the successful candidate will also be expected to
collaborate with NEIU’s Student Center for Science Engagement and other NEIU
units to enhance our students’ preparation for careers in the health
professions, and to participate in service to the department, college and
university. An earned doctorate in biology with an emphasis in anatomy and/or
physiology or a related field is required; teaching experience and experience
with cadavers are desirable, but not required.
