Text and materials
Text: G. Strang, Linear Algebra and its Applications, 3rd Ed.
Computer We will use the computer package MATLAB. This is available on the University's YODA computer with access from the computer labs. There are also student versions (PC or Mac) commercially available in the Bookstore or directly from Prentice Hall. I have an old (8086 DOS) public domain version that I can give you. You can find instructions for using MATLAB on YODA (which can be modified for PC versions) at my web site.

Objective of Course
To reinforce your knowledge and ability in basic linear algebra and to use linear algebra in applications.

Evaluation
There will be a Midterm Thursday, November 5 and a Final Exam Thursday, December 17 from 8:00--10:00 PM. This will count 25% each. The other 50% will be based on 10 assignments. These assignments will be graded on the basis of mathematical correctness and presentation. Assignments must be in final form when turned in - no scratch work, please. Each assignment should consist of a short summary of your results, a short description of your methods, followed by attached pages consisting of your major calculations or computer printouts. I reserve the right to deduct 50% or more for poorly presented assignments. In particular, simply turning in a computer printout is not acceptable. You are encouraged to work together but each student must turn in a separate paper.

Late papers will not be accepted. If you cannot be here in person I accept email, fax or other delivery methods as long as I have the paper in my hand when it is due. One or two missed papers will not be fatal, but if you expect to miss more then you should not take this course.

You are reminded that this is an upper division Math course and you are expected to perform at the level expected of upper level math students. I do not give "D" grades but I do give "C" and "F" grades in this course.
