Text and materials
Text: Hughes-Hallett, Gleason et al. Calculus , J. Wiley, 1994. In addition you should have a TI-85 or TI-82 calculator.
Objectives and Purpose of Course
To understand the basic concepts of continuity, differentiation and integration. The present "Lite" Calculus sequence at Northeastern Illinois is a good choice for students planning careers in architecture, medicine, law, business, the social sciences, the biological and earth sciences, art, music and mathematics education. Students planning to major in applied mathematics, engineering, physics or chemistry might be better off taking a more traditional "cholesterol laden" calculus sequence at their local community college. We will cover most of Chapters 1 - 5 in the text and, in order to properly prepare those students who will be taking Calculus II elsewhere (or here after the text has been changed), topics from Chapter 6 and Sections 7.1 and 7.2. (For more details see the official departmental syllabus.)
Method of Instruction
Lecture and discussion. Students will have an in class graded assignment each class hour.
Evaluation
You will be evaluated on daily work (50%), and 2 hour tests (25% each) tenatively scheduled for Monday March 3, 1997 and Wednesday, April 30, both at noon. Daily work may involve pretests, quizzes, homework or group work. Daily work will not be announced in advance and work not turned in when due will absolutely not be counted. The lowest three daily work grades will be thrown out. There will be an optional final Wednesday, April 30, 1997 at 1:00 PM for those who miss a substantial amount of the daily work. See my web page Daily work policies and grading for more details.

I generally do not give "D" grades, see the University Catalog for rules on "R" and "I" grades. Students should retain all papers handed back until at least the end of the semester.

Note: no class January 20, February 12 and March 17-22.
