Text and materials
Sullivan and Sullivan Precalculus, Prentice Hall, Second Edition, 2000.
You should have a graphing calculator, preferably the TI-85/86 as that is
what I will use in classroom demonstrations. Students continuing on to
calculus or a Math major/minor will need the 85/86. A TI-82 or 83 or
comparable other brand calculator should be acceptable, but the TI-81 is not recommended.
Objective of Course
To get you ready to take calculus. We will cover most of Chapters
1-9 and selections from later chapters.
Evaluation
Daily Work (30%), two tests (30%) and a two part comprehensive final exam (40%).
Daily Work and Homework
Every day, except when there is a test or exam, there will be a problem to do in class. This might be something from the homework or something we are working on in class. The topics will not be announced in advance and there will be no makeups, howe
ver the final grading scale will assume everyone misses two classes. Suggested homework problems will be assigned each day in class, these will not be collected or graded.
Tests
There will be 2 one hour tests during the second hour of class on
Thursday,
February 14 and Tuesday, April 2. If you miss a test, the corresponding
part of the final will count 35% rather than 20%.
Final Exam
Part 1: Tuesday, March 5 -- Chapters 1 -- 4
Part 2: Thursday, May 2 at 10:00 AM -- Chapters 5 -- 9
