Course Description
The course covers linear equations and inequalities in one and several unknowns and linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions.

Performance Outcomes and Goals
This course is the prerequisite for further courses in Mathematics. By itself this course does not meet the University Math Compentency requirements, students must take additional work in Mathematics. Proficiency in this course is necessary for success in Math 106 Precalculus or Math 110 Finite Math.

Text and materials
Text: Aufmann/Barker/Lockwood Intermediate Algebra, 6th edition. You should have a scientific calculator (with a LOG button). Recommended calculators include TI-25, TI-30 etc.

Topics to be covered
This course covers Chapters 2 through 10.

Assessment
You will be evaluated on daily work (40%), homework (10%) and 5 exams (50%).
Daily Work
Daily work may involve pretests, quizzes, homework or group work. You can expect two daily work assignments each day of class. Daily work will not be announced in advance and there will be NO makeups. The lowest 4 daily work grades will be thrown out. There will be a makeup final at 11 AM, Wednesday, June 25 for those who miss more than 8 daily work assignments or an exam. Each daily work counts 10 points. For more details see my web page Daily work policies and grading.
Homework
You will keep a homework diary. I am more interested in seeing a regular pattern (several times each week) than total quantity. You should do these problems in a spiral notebook (or in your book) so they don't get lost. I will come around, collect your diary and spot check your work the week of June 9 - 11 and again the week of June 23 - 25. Each check will be worth 20 points.
Tests
There will be short (50 point) tests over specific competency areas on May 28 (linear functions), June 4 (word problems), June 11 (quadratic equations), June 18 (functions) and June 25, 10AM (logarithmic and exponential functions). These tests will be closed book (and notes) and, unlike the daily work, you may not work together. The tests will be given during the second half of class except for June 25 when it will be given the first half with the makeup test the second half.
Grading
The grade range will be approximately 92% for A, 84% for B and 70% for C. I generally do not give "D" grades, see the University Catalog for rules on "I" grades.

Tutoring is available in the Math Lab, Library 4th floor.
