In the movie the MATRIX and in the book The Giver, by Lois Lowry both utopian societies were created to eleviate pain. By creating worlds were reality is distorted, humans are able to avoid the things in life that make them struggle. Unfortunately, struggling is what makes humans strive to achieve. Struggling makes them feel alive and appreciate the good in what they have done. In both stories the main characters travel on a long and painful journey to escape the utopian societies that were created for them. As they struggle, they become stronger and eventually closer to the reality they seek. Once they reach their journey's end, they realize that the society left behind is better than the utopian society that was created. As you read the book or see the movie, pay careful attention as to how each main character navigates through their utopian maze to reach their end point. |
