Barbara Cooper visually embodies nature's resilience and adaptability through the use of organic form and structural integrity in her work. Using wood glue and scraps of wood veneer, Cooper creates elegant sculptures resembling shapes found in nature, specifically plant life. The curves and grooves in her sculptures represent the tension and release found in the relationship between a living thing and its environment.
During the course of the six week long exhibition, visiting artist Barbara Cooper will be utilizing the gallery as her studio space to create a large scale wood sculpture entitled Current. Visitors will be able to witness the development of the project and have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with the artist. After the completion in the NEIU Gallery, Current will be installed in the lobby of the Avalon Branch Library on South Stony Island Avenue. A video of the artist discussing the project in her studio along with written materials will be included in the exhibition.
The NEIU gallery is located at 5500 N. St. Louis Avenue. Enter the campus at 3701 West Bryn Mawr Avenue.
