About Me

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of

Communication, Media and Theatre at Northeastern

Illinois University (Chicago). I teach courses on

relationships, gender, persuasion, qualitative research,

identity, and communication theory. I conduct research

about qualitative research, ethnography and

autoethnography, the discourse of nature at zoos and

aquaria, coming out stories, and ways in which identities such as sex, gender, and sexuality influence social interaction. I once worked as a bartender at Yellowstone National Park, and I have been a vegetarian since 1997.

I received an Associate’s degree from Danville Area Community College (Danville, IL), a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale), and a Doctorate from the University of South Florida (Tampa). I also attended private, Catholic school most of my life—kindergarten through senior year of high school. Even though I am not a “practicing Catholic,” I try to treat everyone as worthwhile and important. We’re all in this world—this joy, this struggle—together, and I find it important to consider ways of getting along as best as possible.
