The Academic Advisement
Center supports and promotes the University's mission to "foster
student growth and development" while serving and reflecting "a
population which is diverse in age, culture, language and race."
Professional staff advisors provide developmental academic advising to
all generally admitted, degree-seeking undergraduates who have not yet
declared a major. Students are assigned to a staff advisor with whom
they are encouraged to meet until they officially declare a major.
Throughout the advising process students are provided with
opportunities to:
- Learn about educational options,
degree requirements, and university policies and procedures
- Clarify educational objectives
-Develop an academic plan appropriate to educational/career goals and
consistent with academic strengths
Advisors provide guidance in course selection, major selection and academic
planning. Advisors introduce students to the many support services and
resources available and serve as advocates, helping students with problems
related to the academic environment while teaching them how to advocate
on their own behalf. Advisors continuously strive to encourage student
independence, responsible decision-making, and persistence towards degree
completion.
