If you're having problems
with things like what classes to take, what's required for
graduation, whether or not to drop a class, etc...Don't ask your friends,
ask your advisor!
Your advisor can help you ...
- Plan an academic program
- Interpret Placement Test Scores
- Provide information about general education and other graduation requirements
- Identify career resources
- Understand University policies and regulations
- Decide whether to add, drop, or change a class
- Locate appropriate people, departments and resources for assistance
Advising can be a valuable resource...but only if you use it! Try to schedule
an appointment
with you advisor at least once each semester, preferably before registering,
just to make
sure that you are on the right track to achieving your education goals.
To ensure that your advisor will be available to see you, you should...
- Be assertive. If you have a lot of questions,
write them down so that you will not forget them
- Keep a personal account of your academic credits because ultimately
the responsibility is yours
- Tell your advisor as much as you can about your educational and career
goals
- Remember that your advisor is there to provide you with the information
you need to make a decision, not to make the decision for you
- Clearly state what your needs are. In this way your advisor will be
able to assist you more effectively
