Admission to the Graduate College and the Master of Arts Program:
Students entering the M.A. TESL/TEFL Program are not expected to have any
prior preparation or knowledge of the field. Students must, however, fulfill the
requirements for admission to the
Graduate College of
Northeastern Illinois University and indicate their intent to pursue the M.A. in
TESL/TEFL. Be sure to identify the Graduate College code "GT04" on your
application form.
N.B. Due to Graduate College regulations, no more than 9 credit hours (3
classes) may be transferred into any MA/MS degree program from another school or
another department/program at Northeastern. This regulation also applies to
coursework completed as a student-at-large, even if the courses are completed
within the same program; therefore, students-at-large must apply and be accepted
for admission to the department/program before taking a fourth
class. All requests for course transfer credit are subject to review and
approval by the TESL/TEFL Program.
Language Requirement:
For students whose native language is English:
9 credit hours or the equivalent of work in one or more foreign
languages. Students may also demonstrate proficiency through alternate means,
such as a recognized standardized test or oral interview. Additionally, students
who were raised as bilinguals with English and another language can petition for
a waiver of this requirement.
For students whose native language is not English:
English proficiency demonstrated by a score of 95 on the
internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), with a minimum
score of 20 in each of the four sections.
