South Chicago Schools
Neighborhood schools are among
the most important social institutions in any community. In most
Chicago neighborhoods there were public schools and private, mostly Catholic,
parochial schools. South Chicago was no exception. The public
schools served as a means of assimilating different ethnic groups into
the American culture. Many of the private schools were organized
along ethnic lines and provided a comfortable setting for students who
often did not speak English.
