South Chicago Churches
The South Chicago community was the most populous
of the Southeast Side communities and served as a port of entry for new
immigrants. As a result it had the largest number and variety of
churches in the area. The churches were important social and cultural
institutions for the people they served. The neighborhood has changed
in recent years and white European ethnics have been replaced by Hispanics,
mostly Mexicans, and African Americans. As a result many of the area
churches have closed or remain open with new groups in control.
